How a NADRA Marriage Certificate in Islamabad Is Issued
- The Nikah is performed and the Nikah Nama is signed
- The licensed Nikah Registrar registers the marriage with the Union Council under section 5 of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961
- The Union Council enters the marriage in its record
- The computerised marriage registration certificate is issued through the NADRA system from that entry
- Each spouse can then update marital status with NADRA
If any step is missed, for example the Nikah Nama was never deposited with the Union Council, the certificate cannot be issued until the record is completed.
NADRA Does Not Perform the Nikah
This is the most common misunderstanding. NADRA is a database authority. It records marriages, divorces, births and deaths from the information Union Councils enter. A couple cannot “marry at NADRA”. The Nikah is a religious and legal contract registered by the Nikah Registrar; our court marriage in Islamabad page explains it.
Documents for a NADRA Marriage Certificate in Islamabad
| Document | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
| Registered Nikah Nama | Source of the Union Council entry |
| CNICs of bride and groom | Identity and matching of NADRA records |
| CNICs of witnesses (sometimes) | Where the council verifies the entry |
| Application through the Union Council | Starts the computerised entry |
| Foreign spouse’s passport | Where one spouse is not Pakistani |
Requirements can vary between councils; we confirm them before you visit.
Correcting Errors on the Certificate
Errors in Names or CNIC Numbers
A spelling or CNIC error usually starts in the Nikah Nama or the Union Council entry. The Union Council record is corrected first; the NADRA certificate is then re-issued.
Wrong Date or Dower
Where the Nikah Nama itself is wrong, the correction may need affidavits from the parties and the Nikah Registrar. Serious disputes about what the Nikah Nama says are matters for the Family Court.
Old Marriages Never Computerised
Older marriages registered on manual records can be computerised on application with the Union Council, once the original entry is traced.
Using the NADRA Marriage Certificate in Islamabad Abroad
Embassies and foreign immigration authorities often ask for the certificate to be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and sometimes for an English translation of the Nikah Nama. Requirements depend on the country. Our advocates check them for your destination before you apply, so that the NADRA certificate is accepted first time.
- Attestation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- Certified English translation of the Nikah Nama where asked
- Embassy legalisation if the destination country requires it
Updating CNIC and Family Records
After the certificate is issued, each spouse can apply to NADRA to update marital status on the CNIC, and the family registration certificate can be updated. A wife who wishes to add her husband’s name to her CNIC applies separately; it is not automatic.
Divorce Certificates Follow the Same Route
A NADRA divorce registration certificate is issued in the same way, from the Union Council record of an effective talaq or khula. See our talaq registration in Islamabad page.

Foreign Spouses and the NADRA Marriage Certificate in Islamabad
Where one spouse is a foreign national, the Union Council records the marriage using the foreign spouse’s passport details, and the certificate is issued in the same way. Embassies processing spouse visas usually ask for the certificate, the Nikah Nama, translations and Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation. Some also ask for photographs of the Nikah and evidence of the relationship.
Common Embassy Requirements
- NADRA marriage registration certificate
- Nikah Nama with certified English translation
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation
- Passports and CNIC or NICOP of the spouses
Marriages Performed Abroad
A Nikah performed abroad between Pakistanis, or a Pakistani and a foreign national, may be registered at the Pakistani mission or brought onto Pakistani records later. The route depends on where and how the marriage took place. We advise on the documents needed so that the NADRA record can be created and the CNIC marital status updated.
Lost Certificates and Duplicate Copies
If the certificate is lost, a duplicate can usually be obtained from the record. Where the Nikah Nama itself is lost, a certified copy can be obtained from the Union Council or the Nikah Registrar’s register. Our advocates trace old records where families have moved or councils have changed.
Why a NADRA Marriage Certificate in Islamabad Matters
The certificate is the document most institutions now ask for: embassies, employers, insurers, hospitals and NADRA itself when updating CNIC and family records. A Nikah Nama alone is often not accepted for visa applications. Obtaining the certificate soon after the Nikah avoids difficulties later, especially if records are lost or a Nikah Registrar retires.
- Spouse and family visas
- CNIC marital-status update
- Family registration certificate
- Children’s B-Forms
- Inheritance and pension claims
Union Council Records in Islamabad
In the Islamabad Capital Territory, marriages are entered by the Union Council within whose area the Nikah was registered. Where a sector or village has changed council, or a Nikah Registrar has retired, the original register may be held elsewhere. Our advocates trace the record before applying, which saves repeated visits.
Checking the Entry Before Applying
Names, parentage, CNIC numbers, date of Nikah and dower should match the Nikah Nama exactly. A mismatch is far easier to correct before the certificate is printed than afterwards.
Certificates for Old Nikahs
Couples who married years ago, before computerised registration, sometimes find that no NADRA record exists. The Union Council can usually computerise the entry from its manual register on application, with the original Nikah Nama and both CNICs. Where the register cannot be found, the position must be established with evidence, and in difficult cases a declaratory suit may be needed.
Children’s Records and the Marriage Certificate
Children’s B-Forms and the family registration certificate are linked to the parents’ marriage record. Where the marriage record is missing or wrong, children’s records may be delayed. Correcting the marriage entry first usually resolves the children’s records as well.

Common Embassy Rejections and How to Avoid Them
- Certificate details differing from passport spellings
- Nikah Nama photocopy instead of a certified copy
- Missing Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation
- Translation not certified
- Certificate issued long after the Nikah without explanation
Each of these can be anticipated. We compare the certificate, Nikah Nama, passports and CNICs before you submit anything to an embassy.
Divorced or Widowed Spouses Remarrying
Where a spouse was married before, the new certificate and the embassy file usually need the earlier divorce or death certificate as well. Make sure the earlier record is complete before the new Nikah, so that the new certificate can be issued without a query.
Name Changes After Marriage
A wife who wishes to use her husband’s name on her CNIC applies to NADRA after the marriage is recorded. The change is optional. Where documents abroad already use a married name, the Pakistani records should be brought into line before a visa application, to avoid questions about identity.
Why Clients Instruct Our Islamabad Office
Clients instruct us on marriage certificates because the work is done by named advocates rather than agents, the documents are read before any advice is given, and the fee is confirmed in writing before work starts. Qanoon Group advocates have practised since 1985, and appellate work is handled by Fiaz Ahmed Khakh, Advocate Supreme Court.
- Advice from an enrolled advocate, not a clerk
- Written fee confirmation, with official charges shown separately
- WhatsApp updates after every step
- Confidential handling of personal and family information
Using the Record in Inheritance and Pension Claims
A widow claiming a pension, a share in inheritance or insurance benefits will usually be asked for the marriage certificate along with the spouse’s death certificate. Where the marriage was never computerised, the claim can be delayed while the record is traced. Obtaining the certificate during the marriage, rather than after a death, spares the family this difficulty, and it also makes the children’s records straightforward.
When to Ask an Advocate for a NADRA Marriage Certificate in Islamabad
Most couples obtain the certificate without difficulty. Ask an advocate where the Nikah Nama is missing from the council, a party’s earlier divorce was never registered, the spouse is a foreign national, or an embassy has rejected the documents. Those are the cases where the certificate stalls and legal work is needed.
